iPad App: Planetary

Image

These guys from Bloom Studio took "my music is my universe" to literal virtual sense and created an iPad app that turns your music and map it out into a galaxy. Navigating the universe is easy, each star represents the artist or band, tapping a star will show you the planets that orbits the star/sun. The planets represents the albums and the moons that surrounds the planets represents the songs. Tapping the songs plays the music. You can navigate around your universe while the songs play. The interface is very intuitive and highly interactive and since the universe is almost infinitely spatial, they have provide a quick button to return to the planet that the song is now currently playing.

The animation is smooth and makes you feel like flying through the universe of your songs. Although it can get quite repetitive after awhile. I wish the app can differentiates the different planetary system by different colors or themes so that you get a visual sense, maybe an update for later. Planetary does a great job defying gravity, when you flick your finger across the screen, the animation will rotate around the planet or star accordingly, Thanx to the accelerometer, the speed is determined by the speed of your flick. One thing it could add for the next update is to by default rotate according to the speed of the song. That would be cool. You can stop the animation by taping once on the screen.

While playing the song, it shows the progress of the song by highlighting the orbit. When the moon completes orbiting the planet the song finish. This is a great app for parties, get togethers where you want to put some music in the background while you hang out and the like an art piece let out in the coffee table. It plays in the background too so if you launch another, it will still play. If you sleep with music on and you know those romantic moments and planetary sets the mood visually too.
